South Asian Ethnic Wear Size Guide: How to Measure Right

Step-by-step measurement guide for buying salwar kameez online.

Sizing is the most common reason for returns in South Asian ethnic wear. Buyers use Western sizing intuition in a context where it does not apply.

The Three Measurements That Matter

Chest/Bust: Measure at the fullest point. Add 2 inches to get your minimum garment size.
Waist: Measure at the narrowest point, usually 1 inch above the navel.
Hip: Measure at the fullest point, typically 7-9 inches below the natural waist.

Length

Kurta length is measured from shoulder to hem. A 42-inch kurta sits mid-thigh on a 5 foot 4 inch frame. A 46-inch reaches to knee. A 52-inch or longer is a full anarkali. Standard sizing assumes a 5 foot 4 inch reference height.

Practical Tip

When in doubt between two sizes, size up. It is far easier to have a garment taken in than let out. Most ethnic wear has generous seam allowance.
