How to Buy the Perfect Salwar Kameez Online
Fabric, fit, and sizing when shopping South Asian ethnic wear online.
Buying salwar kameez online is more straightforward than most buyers expect once you know what the listings are actually telling you. The most common mistakes are misjudging size, misunderstanding fabric grades, and overlooking dupatta quality.
Fabric First
Cotton: Best for daily wear and summer. Look for thread count above 60s for softness. Cotton lawn drapes well and holds print sharpness.
Rayon: Lightweight with a silk-like drape. Works well for anarkali cuts. Tends to wrinkle.
Georgette and Chiffon: Semi-sheer, flowing fabrics used in festive pieces. Georgette holds embroidery better.
Chanderi: A silk-cotton blend with a natural sheen. Often used in Kurta sets for Eid and Diwali.
Sizing
South Asian ethnic sizing does not follow Western standards. A size M in an Indian brand typically corresponds to a US size 6-8. Always check the brand specific size chart listing chest, waist, and hip measurements. When measurements fall between two sizes, size up.
Dupatta
A 3-piece set is worth more than a 2-piece. Check dupatta dimensions: a full dupatta is 2.25 metres. Fabric should match or intentionally contrast the main piece.
